Schubert, De Lange, Grieg, Mendelssohn, Wolf, Faure

Nienke Oostenrijk, Laura de Lange

In this cycle of songs spring is the spring in very different ways musically depicted. In the allegorical song "Viola" by Franz Schubert (1), both spring and flowers are presented as people. Spring is the lover and bridegroom-to-be of Viola, the well-known violet. Viola, in all her beauty, prepares herself for the oncoming reunion with her bridegroom. On her way to her lover Viola is attacked by an unexpected, icy cold, which is also portrayed in the piano part. She suddenly realizes that she has been extremely naïve! An early death for Viola is unavoidable, as she cannot endure the extreme cold. Spring, appearing as sovereign leader of the flowers at the dramatic moment when his sweetheart goes missing, disperses as it were an AMBER Alert among the flowers, urging them to search for Viola, ultimately to no avail. Opposite this lament and fateful forces of the spring, the hymns in "Das erste Veilchen" (5) and "Med and Primula Veris' (4). The pansy and primula (primrose), the first spring flowers proclaim the coming of the spring and thus the return of love, hope and joy.

Nienke Oostenrijk

Dutch soprano Nienke Oostenrijk studied at the Sweelinck School of Music in Amsterdam after having gained her MA in History at the State University in Groningen. She studied with Margaret Honig, Cora Canne Meijer and Arleen Auger and participated in master-classes with Elly Ameling and Robert Holl.

Nienke Oostenrijk is a much sought-after Lieder performer and concert soloist. With conductors such as Jaap van Zweden, Frans Brüggen, Jac van Steen, John Nelson, Jos van Veldhoven and Jan-Willem de Vriend she performed Bach’s Matthew Passion, his Weihnachtsoratorium, Mozart’s Requiem, Mass in c and Davide penitente, Pergolesi’s Sta- bat Mater and Händel’s Messiah, in The Netherlands, Germany and France.

Nienke has sung the role of Konstanze in Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail. Other roles include Pamina in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Sophie in Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier and Tebaldo in Verdi’s Don Carlos, with conductors such as Kees Bakels, Marc Soustrot, Friedrich Haider, and Carlo Rizzi.

Her CD’s were very well received in the press. Her recordings include Bach aria’s for soprano and oboe, with her sister Pauline, and Verhulst’s Mass in As, with the Residentie Orchestra, conducted by Matthias Bamert.

Nienke has performed for many dignitaries, e.g. at the wedding ceremony of Prince Friso and Princess Mabel (Delft, 2004), and on the occasion of the Zilveren Regeringsjubileum of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands (2005, The Hague).

Nienke her passion for chamber music and Lieder recitals is reflected in the many concerts she has given with a large variety of musicians, among others string quartets (Schönberg, Daniël), her sister Pauline (oboe) and pianists Marianne Boer and Laura de Lange.

Laura de Lange

Pianist Laura de Lange is very active in the field of chamber music and Lieder accompaniment, frequently performing with singers Wiard Witholt and Nienke Oostenrijk. Over the years she played many concerts with Jascha Albracht (violoncello), Joachim Eijlander (violoncello) and Roeland Jagers (viola). Because of her interest in musical theatre she also collaborates with actor/singer Kelvin Wormgoor. Laura has given concerts in the Netherlands - the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Rotterdam concert hall De Doelen among them - and abroad, in major cities in France and Germany. In addition, she regularly performs for Dutch radio stations. Laura is being coached by Hans Eijsackers.

Laura’s concerts stand out for their carefully selected programs and her accompanying oral explanations. She elucidates the works and outlines the lives of the composers in an accessible manner, which strengthens the bond with audiences, creates greater involvement, and makes listening more enjoyable. More than a decade of enthusiastic audience response has convinced Laura of the added value of oral explanations to concerts. In 2012 she was invited by the Amsterdam Conservatory to give a lecture on this subject. Additional lectures will follow.

The romantic music of her ancestors Daniel and Samuel de Lange Jr. plays an important part in her musical life. Establishing the De Lange Foundation, she has revived interest in the musical legacy of these composers, who were once famous, major characters in the Dutch musical scene, but are now virtually forgotten.

Laura has recorded two CDs exclusively dedicated to the music of her forefathers which have been acclaimed by public and press alike. A review of the violoncello/piano works by Samuel de Lange Jr. in the monthly magazine ‘Luister’ mentioned “....the impressive performance of Laura

"Nienke Oostenrijk sings with beautiful, understated and lyric soprano, is communicative and musical and has an excellent pronunciation. Laura de Lange is a equal accompanist on piano, where the soprano can lean on. A sympathic recital!"
